There are multiple goals I'd like to achieve in my life. I'd like to complete an ultramarathon of 100 mile distance, I want to calm my mind and reduce daily anxiety, I want to reach a partnership level in my firm, I want to improve the connection with my family and friends, most importantly my wife and kids. I want to improve others' lives, while living mine to the fullest.
But along with most people it's challenging to keep up the effort. I wake up and roll over in bed instead of taking the 5 mile run I should. I scroll through social media instead of researching or studying for my enhanced state license. I watch a tv show instead of reaching out to those I care about or having a conversation with my wife.
The tasks feel daunting. It's an hour to run, it's an hour to study, it's 30 minutes for a conversation. When I think about this time I feel I'm not going to get it done, so why start? I think about the 10 minutes it takes to get ready, the hour it takes to run, and the 20 minutes it takes to cool down before I can get ready for work. It's too much time — I'll just get to work a bit early instead. I get overwhelmed by the amount of it. This needs to stop.
Just get started. Even if I just put on my shoes and run around the block, it's better than doing nothing. And to be honest, if I run around the block I might just run a bit further. Starting a conversation with a family member or friend can just be a text message. Why can't I start with "I only have a few minutes so I may not be able to respond, but…"
I no longer want to live my life in a routine without intention. I want to make it better.
Before jumping into the full challenge, I'm easing in by beginning with the 30 for 30.
We are starting with this to establish an environment allowing me to achieve my goals. Body to prepare my physical health to give me energy, Space to organize my surroundings to prevent obstacles, and Mind to prepare my mental health for what's to come.
Workout every morning. Wake up early, get on my gear, and get out the door. Running, biking, core workout or strength training. Focus on drastic improvement for at least 10 minutes, not just getting through the routine. Lose a bit of weight, gain some strength, and eat healthier.
Journal my story each day to prepare for the next. Get myself used to being publicly exposed and open.
Organize my desk, closet, garage, car, office, and my computer files to be more intuitively labeled and categorized.
